US Movie Subscription Services Compared – MoviePass, Sinemia, AMC A-List, Movie Club, and Alamo Season Pass

Moviepass may be struggling to hang on, with price increases, constantly crashing stock, and increasing restrictions, it may seem doomed.  However it may still be a viable option for some, and it has paved the way for several US based subscription services that are now available.

With all the new changes to MoviePass and the new Options for movie subscriptions, I’m going to help you navigate your options and place some of the important features and highlights below.


  • Founded in 2011
  • Price: $14.95 a month
  • Uses a Card that can be swiped to purchase tickets.
    • Ticket can only be purchases for same day showtimes and at the theater box office or kiosk.
  • Can purchase 1 2D ticket per day, most theaters are supported.
    • Major new Releases are restricted for as long as two weeks.
    • Additional surcharges apply during peak times.
    • Some peak time showings and movies are unavailable.
    • Cannot see a movie twice.
  • Ideal for people who regularly visit a variety of independent theaters.


  • Founded in 2014
  • Price: Variable
  • Cardless ticket purchases.
    • Tickets can be purchased in advance using online ticket brokers.
  • Can purchase 1-3 tickets, major theaters supported.
    • Various plans are available, ranging from 1 standard ticket to 3 tickets, some plans include 3d, imax, and 4dx
    • No restrictions on movies that can be seen
    • Tickets can only be purchased using online brokers, such as fandango and atom tickets.
    • You can not have multiple pending reservations, for example if you reserve a ticket for Friday on Monday, you cannot reserve another ticket until after the showtime of the Friday ticket.
  • Ideal for people who only see a few movies at major theater chains.
  • Includes some discounts for area restaurants.

Cinemark Movie Club

  • Launched 2018
  • Price: $8.99 a month
  • Cardless ticket purchase
    • Tickets can be reserved at any time for any showing through the Cinemark App or Website
  • Includes 1 Ticket
    • Additional tickets are available for $8.99 each
    • No restrictions, if it is a premium format than you are asked to pay the price difference.
  • Ideal for Cinemark regulars that have ticket prices greater than $8.99, or who purchase a lot of concessions.
  • Includes 20% discount at the concession stand.
  • Removes online booking fee for all purchases.

AMC Stubs A-List

  • Launched 2018
  • Price $19.95 a month
  • Cardless ticket purchase
    • Tickets can be reserved in advance on the app or website, or received at showtime at the box office.
  • Includes 3 Movies a Week
    • No restrictions, premium formats are included.
  • Ideal for AMC Regulars and people who prefer premium formats.
  • Includes 10% discount at the concession stand.
  • Includes access to $5 any-showing tickets on Tuesdays
  • Removes online booking fee for all purchases.

Alamo Season Pass

  • Launching 2018
  • Price Unknown
  • Cardless ticket purchase
    • Tickets can reserved in advance or the day of on the App.
  • Includes one movie a day
    • Standard formats only
  • Ideal for AMC regulars
  • This program is in a test market currently and not publicly available, yet.

As you can see, there are a lot of different subscription programs and a lot of variety between them.  At current, it seems as though AMC A List may be the most well rounded plan, however if you are someone who likes a lot of independent films or do not have an AMC in good condition near you, then there are a lot of up and coming options in this new category.
